Chapel Hill Beat

Break-In Alerts uses police reports to track recent residential break-ins in Chapel Hill. Like The Chapel Hill News Police Blotter, Alerts will give the dates of break-ins and identify their locations by street blocks only, not by street addresses.

In addition, however, we will provide what seems to us relevant and interesting information: the possible times of the break-ins. In most cases, that will be between the time the property was last known to be secure and the time the break-in was discovered or reported.

In future, Alerts also may cover vehicle and business break-ins but for now our focus on the break-ins that leave many victims feeling especially vulnerable and violated: strangers breaking and entering into their homes with the intent to steal.

Going forward, we would welcome any additional information on break-ins reported here. We would especially like to know how victims plan to protect themselves in future and other safety tips.

Description: From Community Services Unit, Chapel Hill Police Department: On Monday 12/14 at 9:15am we received a residential (silent) alarm from a residence located on the 100 block of Weaver Dairy Rd. The homeowner arrived at the same time as the first officer on the scene, as the officer and the homeowner walked towards the house they noticed pry marks on a side door. The officer announced this on the radio to incoming units and asked the homeowner to wait by his vehicle. As the officer began walking towards the back of the house he heard glass shatter and saw a black male on the ground on his knees. The suspect got up and ran towards Weaver Dairy Rd. The officer and the homeowner gave pursuit. The suspect ran across the road towards Sedgefield Dr. The officer gave a description and direction of travel over the radio and asked for back up. He described the suspect as a black male 5'08-5'10, 160-175lbs, wearing black gloves, black Carhart style jacket, blue jeans, dark boots and a royal blue toboggan. The suspect was carrying a crowbar. Officers arrived quickly and set up a perimeter for the K-9 Unit. We then received a 911 call from the area of Foxwod Dr. reporting seeing a B/M dressed in black carrying a gun. The track was started and in sounded like it went north from Sedgefield. Officers located a backpack belonging to the homeowner containing several pieces of jewelry, two cameras, two pairs of sunglasses and a change jar. Officers spotted a suspicious vehicle in the area and after conducting a traffic stop they arrested the driver on unrelated charges and took him in for questioning. The suspect was not located but officers believe that the individual they arrested was operating the getaway car. This is all I have at this time. Please remind everyone to lock their doors and windows and make sure they set their alarms if they have one. Also, please report any suspicious activity by calling 911 any time of day. As you can see this home was broken into at 9:15 am... Have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season, Mark Geercken
